Equidistant projection (aka Equirectangular projection) is a simple projection, which maps meridians to vertical straight lines. This projection is not conformal, nor equal area. It has more distortions, than many other projections have, but is a good projection to use easy geographical areas as digital data. In other words this projection makes it easy to use maps in computers - for geographic information systems.
