The Mercator projection is a popular cylindrical map projection, and has been a standard for nautical purposes. It is a conformal projection preserving the angles and the shapes of small objects. This projection has size and shape distortions of larger objects, of objects closer to poles. It is for example popular by showing the entire World on one map and it is good by showing Australia and Oceania regions of the World.
